Genealogies Week 2: Peer Seminar and Idea Development

Genealogies Week 2

Peer Seminar:

It's been a week since the release of the brief there has been slight confusion among students on how we can approach the narrative aspect to the project. This confusion somewhat applies to me because although I have some solid and potential ideas that were covered in the previous Intermediate Studio blog post, the objects chosen don't particularly have a personal narrative to them.

During today's workshop session we got into a group of 10 and shared our ideas with one another, this was helpful because we were able to discuss our potential ideas, receive feedback on which idea to develop upon, on how we could meet the brief and more importantly Ideas on how we can connect a narrative to our object.

This session was all documented onto a large mind map which is shown bellow, it's was good to have a form of brainstorming session with others to develop and inspire ideas.

However after the brainstorming session it came to my attention that my three ideas didn't particularly have any narrative to them yet. However after talking to tutors about this i was able to get a little clarification on how I could add narratives to the ideas.

Idea Development:

Pills Idea

The brainstorming session provided me with some pretty good development to follow up on the Pill idea. keeping with the whole concept of capsule pills as a form of sustenance, I could create a photo shoot where food and drink is replaced by a mass amount of these pills instead of a single pill. For example a glass filled with orange and yellow pills would resemble fresh orange juice. Alternatively I could combine pills with actual food example being things like a piece of toast but with yellow pills spread across it to represent butter, or filling an empty eggshell with white and orange pills to create a boiled egg. For the narrative I could potentially link the idea with the struggles of mental illness and those in particular who have to take medicinal pills on a daily basis, this will require some additional research to prevent insensitivity. The idea could be a portrayal on how these pills might be effecting daily lifestyle of those who take them throughout the day.

Turning Function into Dysfunction

Developing upon the dysfunctional items idea, I noted that when looking at examples already created by Giuseppe Colarusso, I felt a feeling of discomfort as I scrolled through his work. This feeling of anxiety and mental discomfort is common when looking at things that are uneven, out of place or not what they should be completely dispossessing the feeling of satisfaction to the viewers. An idea is creating a series of designs and possibly animations that focus this feeling of discomfort and lack of satisfaction whilst having a narrative explaining it what it is that causes this feeling.

Below is an example I quickly created using Photoshop, practically this item combination wouldn't work at all but the concept of what the two items do contrast one another, one emits a lot of noise whilst the other suppresses.
