Keeping Busy Over the Winter Break

Let's kick into gear.

Ahh christmas limbo, those 5 days of not knowing what time it is as we let ourselves go in front of the telly with an abundance of chocolate we got as gifts and left over food from Christmas day. As i'm typing this i'm eaten enough junk food to choke a well.. me. However! during the holiday period I tried to keep myself busy by experimenting with adobe illustrator more and try out new tools, the blend tool in particular has been a pretty awesome recent find. I took a small break from doing university work and decided to focus primarily on making some designs for both my Instagram account and for a portfolio, lines and crosses on a grey background are great and all but I want to provide evidence that I am capable of working in a variety of art styles and not stuck to one. I wanted to create this blog post to showcase what I have been working on these past couple of days.

German Cyberpunk Inspired Posters

To begin with I wanted to create something massively different in comparison to the rest of my work that you would find on Instagram. I decided to create some glitchy hand posters that was inspired by a combination of artists that I follow on Instagram the german text of dekodierung, beobachten and beurteilen roughly translate to 'Decoding' 'Observing' and 'judging'. The subculture of cyberpunk is quite prevalent in countries such as Germany and Russia and the idea of having german text scrawl down the design was from a german book called. 'Dekodierung'

Using adobe photoshop I edited three different hands I obtained using adobe stock and added a couple of glitch lines to each. I then brought them into illustrator and experimented with different tools trying to make them look similar but different. Out of the three designs, my personal favourite has to be 'Beobachten' (the blue one) the hand cut in half and the lava lamp globs coming out of the ring finger turned out well.

Typographic Designs

A style that I don't particularly work with are those with typography as the centre piece to the design. These next two designs were a combination of typography and some design techniques that I learnt from tutorials. The first was one i simply called 'wave' using the envelope distort tool on a selection of lines I was able to edit them to give them wave like curves. I then brought it into Photoshop to edit the colour to a fiery orange and add some text to it. The idea to chop up the text was inspired by a piece from Baugasm.

for the next design I followed an Adobe Illustrator tutorial on Youtube on how to create a design that looks like the text was falling into a crevasse of sorts. using the free distort tool I was able to put an overhead perspective as if the text was lying on the floor as the lower half of each letter dripped over the edge. I felt like putting the text 'On edge' was fitting.

Blending tool

My most recent designs have been using the dark grey/black from my art style as a consistent background to work with and out of them all i found my two latest designs to be my favourite so far. Using a combination of the pencil tool and the blend tool I was able to make some really interesting wire like designs. The Goat's skull in particular turned out extremely well, these designs did rely on a bit of trial and error to get the right look, but after tweaking and playing with the direct selection tool I was able to get some designs that I was satisfied with.

and that's pretty much it so far with any personal development. I still have 17 days till term 2 of uni starts and i'll be using majority of them to catch up with work on my brief and the essay. Additionally in the near future I will be creating a blog post about my visual analysis for theory as practice.
