Speculative Futures Week 4: A Multi-Sensual Outcome
A Multi-Sensual Outcome
Like I stated in my previous blog post for the speculative futures brief, I want to explore with creating a multi-sensual piece for part of my end outcome for this project. When I first came up with the Idea I initially looked into the scented print option and contacted multiple companies that provide such service to see if they could assist me with this idea. Unfortunately I hit a bit of a dead end due to companies either not able to provide the type of printing service I was after or companies redirecting me to other companies that would only allow the service if I were to purchase in bulk which is a shame. However that didn't stop me from experimenting with this idea. After contacting a bunch of companies about this idea with no avail I decided to look into ways on creating food scented prints at home.
Scented Paper out of Scrap Paper
I wanted to see if it was possible to find a way of infusing paper with a particular scent and researching online I came across many articles and tutorials about making scented paper out of scented oils and scrap paper, this consisted of mulching and blending the paper and oil together and leaving it to set eventually drying and becoming sheets of coarse paper. Pretty and effective as it may be the issue I have with it is that the paper looks extremely fragile and would probably snap, tare and deteriorate if I were to print on it, this paper looks like something that would be more used in hand craft so perhaps instead I could consider painting or even screen print on this type of paper for my outcome. Below is a link to a tutorial on how to make such paper.
Another idea I came up with is the use of a vehicle air freshener to infuse different gsm printing paper sealed in a container for a few days and see the results. Car air fresheners have quite a powerful scent to them but usually don't stock food scents besides fruit or confectionery. however after looking online I found a bacon scented car air freshener being sold for cheap on Amazon, the reviews were mostly positive so I followed through and purchased one to see if I could make paper smell like 'bacon'. (Has to be the most bizarre purchase I have made on amazon to date!) I was able to get this on prime so it was delivered by the end of the day of purchase which was good timing.

Surprisingly enough the air freshener did smell exactly like 'Sizzling Bacon' well, more like a packet of frazzles than actual bacon but it did the trick. I sealed the air freshener and paper away in an air tight container for a few days but when I came back to it the paper only had the scent for about 30 seconds and the air freshener it self had completely depleted it scent. The container still smells of bacon to this day however. The cat loves it.
This idea was a swing and miss, I probably could have researched online to see if it did work or not without the need to purchase the air freshener to find out myself, but i'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the excitement I got wondering if it would actually work.
Demeter Fragrances
I was starting to run out of plausible ideas to create scented paper that wasn't about lathering paper in food grease because that's gross. But I luckily came across an american company called Demeter Fragrance library which has an abundance of hand crafted fragrances from standard scents such as lavender to scents that are a bit odd like the green fuzz on tennis balls and Russian leather no joke. But! this company sells loads of different food scented fragrances both savoury and sweet, I was able to purchase a couple of food scented tester fragrances for about $4 each and when they have been delivered I will be printing some prints out and spraying them with these fragrances to see how long the scent lasts and if the scents are effective.
The scents I purchased to experiment individually with are:
Pizza
Cinnamon Rolls
Watermelon
Fiery curry
Gin & tonic
I chose these flavours due to them having contrasting scents to one another both savoury and sweet with addition of a beverage, if this initial idea does go to plan I will look into purchasing different flavours to find out which will be the best for my multi sensual outcome.
