Genealogies Week 3: Additional Idea Development

Genealogies Week 3

Deciding on an idea:

Reflecting on the development on ideas from the previous week, I have decided to progress with the 'Turning Function into Dysfunction' idea for this brief. Out of the three ideas, I found this idea to be the best outcome and with a valid narrative that I can work with I can expand on this idea over the next couple of weeks and eventually create a final outcome to present.

Now that I have a base plan to work from I created a mind map to generate additional ideas to see how I could approach this. The mind map included a list of objects that I could make dysfunctional as well ideas on how I could incorporate the narrative aspect into the design, below is a scan of the mind map.

Today's brainstorm session went exceptionally well, I came up with some pretty solid ideas regarding the dysfunctional object idea. During the creation of the mind map I was able to get some insight on my ideas so far with the tutor Richard, he said that he liked what I had so far and looked forward to seeing further development. Additionally he gave me a great idea with the project, due to the narrative explaining how we get the feeling of discomfort and anxiety from looking at specific items that are 'uncomfortable'. Richard suggested about trying to bring a personal approach to the idea, although I had considered this before I simply looked at it the wrong way. when it comes to discomfort caused by an object, I personally cannot stand polystyrene, I hate the sound it makes when rubbed together, the feel of it, and how messy it gets. The very thought of it makes my spine crawl, unpacking electronics that have polystyrene protection is a nightmare.

I then came up with the idea of having items and objects that are part of my daily life and routine but made out of polystyrene, objects such as my computer which I spend a lot of time at working or playing games or perhaps my toothbrush.

Magazine Portfolio Idea:

In the first year of uni, for the self negotiated project I created a mock up/prototype for a magazine called Pathetic Aesthetic, the magazine had a heavy cyberpunk/digital theme to it and it's an ongoing project that I am very eager to complete and possibly print and publish. An idea I had during todays session was to make a portfolio in the format of a magazine throughout my time on the course at the uni, presenting my projects in article form.
