Imminent Self Week 4: Post Winter Break

Post Winter Break(down)

A Run Down on Things.

So there are only a couple of days till the second term begins and as i'm writing this blog post I've come to a slight dilemma in regards to the Imminent Self brief. Over the break I've had difficulty enjoying my idea for the project and following through with it. This has resulted in my motivation to continue with it to plummet as I've always had some form of distraction to pull me away from it such as video games and artwork that doesn't relate to the project briefs. I went to the studio on Monday 8th January to see if I could kick myself into gear before the term started but I fell ill and ended up bed ridden for the following week. However without sounding like i'm making a victim identity out of this situation i'm writing this post as a second attempt to kick into gear before the second term starts.

When I was in the studio on Monday I was able to create a master list of everything that needs to be done as well as what I would like to have done for all modules. For the Process and production I am completely on top of, there might be a few tweaks such as grammar but i'm rather satisfied with what I have to submit on here for that particular module. For theory I have yet to work on my visual analysis but I have a very solid, contextually appropriate idea that can produce and document for submission, at the moment i'm not sure on how I will present the documentation of the visual analysis but I was thinking of perhaps a video along side physically showcasing the visual analysis. Additionally I have purchased a new contextual studies journal because my initial one that I bought for the start of the year has become more of a note book for the lectures and anything university related. Although sketchbooks or 'contextual portfolios' aren't really my forte I intend on fully completing the recently bought sketchbook because It's something I've never done before and I would love to have one completed that can sit on my shelf at home.

Returning to my Imminent self project, I have concerns about it due to it being 25% of the Studio practice module and I don't want to fall behind on it due to an idea with a poor outcome. There is a formative for both my imminent self project and the following project which is speculative futures mid February meaning I have just short of a month to create something presentable.

Quick Recap on my Idea.

For my imminent self project I decided to connect the Imminence of technology with the theory of self evolution (transhumanism) by creating a fake company that specialised in advance medical research and manufactured human augmentation such as Prosthetic body parts and genetic enhancement. This is a very cyberpunk inspired idea, taking heavy inspiration from fictional works such as Deus ex. The problem I have with this is, that's a lot of work for an idea like this. At the moment It feels too theory heavy, and that I'm thinking too over the top with it. On the master list that I created for this I wrote down what I would like to design for the presentation. The list consisted of the following:

  • Create an appropriate name and logo for the company.
  • Conceptualise colour schemes and a design style for the company.
  • Create website designs and look into creating a domain for it.
  • Create some art and designs that can be featured on the website.
  • Conceptualise a corporate identity to increase immersion.

These are the main assets that I wish to bring into practice for this project. At this moment of time it does feel somewhat daunting because of how much I want to get done for this combined with the deadline for it as well as juggling all other modules.

Creating a Name and Logo.

Creating names has never been my strong suit, so coming up with a professional sounding name for this company has been a real head scratcher. In my previous Imminent Self blog post I looked at a cyberpunk 'Mega Corporation' name generator to help me come up with some ideas for this project. I decided to revisit the site and write down and brain storm potential names that would fit my company.

Conceptualise colour schemes and a design style.

My idea of a colour scheme and style for this company would be futuristic, clean and give off a professional feel to it. Design styles such as Sarif Industries from deus ex with it's golds and soft greys is a good inspiration as it portrays the feeling of regal, wealth and grandeur.

In contrast there is the colour palette and style of the latest wipeout racing game, the menus are bold with striking eye catching colours yet give have a minimal appearance. This borders a more bold aesthetic than a soft and subtle approach like the Sarif Industries.

Creating Website designs and looking into creating a domain.

Creating the website is the core outcome that I intend on creating for this project, the intention is to create an actual domain that can be accessed to the public. There are a couple of sites where I can purchase a domain and I have been considering in doing so for this project. I haven't really created a proper website before so this would be rather interesting to do, I have a basic understanding to coding and layout design so it shouldn't be too difficult to whip some concepts and eventual final outcome for this project.
Creating Art and Designs for Website

I intend to create some designs and additional art pieces to go onto the website to flesh it out a bit more, designs such as advertisements, banners and other art pieces that relate to the company would be included to make the website look more complete and active.

Conceptualising a Corporate Identity

To add a form of immersion to the company I had this idea of making an additional corporate  identity such as letter heads and mockups, maybe add some headshot photographs to the website for 'employees' to make it looks like a legitimate company. This is more of an additional idea once I have the core outcome designed.
