Speculative Futures Week 3: Concept Design
Concept Designs
One thing I have to take into consideration is that the idea of designing around the object of pills, is and has been a very popular design choice over the years. Even the concept of taking pills as food has been done before if not over done. Additionally one thing that I have noticed is that there are a couple of students who are doing similar ideas with pills, I guess the idea is common in regards to fictional, speculative future.
This makes me think about what I can do that will be different than what has already been done. One thing I don't want to do is create another brand/company with some simple packaging prototypes because it's such a basic design idea to do, I want something that I can experiment with and reach out of my comfort zone a little bit. That being said I want to create something that can create Immersion, something that could be interactive (not interactive as in come and eat all these cold and flu capsules, just to clarify) and maybe even believed to be a plausible speculation on the future.
Pillustrations
For some concept designs I began with creating some pill themed illustrations, or 'Pillustrations' (I had to) to experiment with minimal design ideas that I could possibly build upon to create an outcome. I also looked at if a pill represented a particular food, what colour could the pill be, example being watermelon could have a red and green coloured pill. This also lead to what if fast food brands coined in on the food as pills concept, what would a pill from McDonald's, KFC or Subway look like? I made some designs of fast food pills that feature the colour and branding of the companies, my favourite out of these designs is the subway food pill, I think the combination of the bright colours and the name going across the side of the pill makes it stand out compared to the rest of the designs.
Additionally I experimented with some extra pill themed designs that could serve as potential logos or illustrations, they all feature a minimal style and incorporate the capsule pill in some way. The illustrations I liked in particular were the pill designs that were snapped in half revealing a type of food (the apple and the burger) These designs could be developed to make some cutesy posters and advertisements.
During the week I also had a go at photography with a cold and flu capsule, I took a dinner plate and using a dotted sticker roll as a table matt I was able to make a futuristic looking scene, I then edited it on Photoshop to give it this scan line cyberpunk feel to it. I think this came out rather well, i'm not entirely the greatest with photography but i'm glad with the result.
I had ideas of illustrations and a few concept designs but I was having trouble coming up with an outcome that would be unique and different. This then brought up a brilliant idea from a brainstorming session with a fellow student about an outcome that featured multi-sensual properties. The outcome could consist of a series of posters that have food scented paper representing the food pill it's advertising, so a burger pill poster could possibly smell like a burger and so on. Now without just slapping grease and oil onto paper because that sounds messy, perhaps I could actually look into either creating my own food flavoured scent to apply, or look at printing services that do a scented print option. Initially I chose to look into printing services that do a scented print option, I contacted a few companies about this in hopes I could get some samples to present in my formative assessment. However a week later I haven't been so successful, majority of the companies either didn't get in touch or redirected me to other companies that didn't provide what I was after. So it looks like i'm going to be experimenting with trying to make paper smell like food, during this I am going to contact some more print companies in hopes that i can get some food scented samples to work with.
In the next blog post for speculative futures I will be documenting my experimentation with this idea of trying to make a multi-sensual outcome.
