Speculative Futures Week 4: A Multi-Sensual Outcome

Image
A Multi-Sensual Outcome Like I stated in my previous blog post for the speculative futures brief, I want to explore with creating a multi-sensual piece for part of my end outcome for this project. When I first came up with the Idea I initially looked into the scented print option and contacted multiple companies that provide such service to see if they could assist me with this idea. Unfortunately I hit a bit of a dead end due to companies either not able to provide the type of printing service I was after or companies redirecting me to other companies that would only allow the service if I were to purchase in bulk which is a shame. However that didn't stop me from experimenting with this idea. After contacting a bunch of companies about this idea with no avail I decided to look into ways on creating food scented prints at home.  Scented Paper out of Scrap Paper I wanted to see if it was possible to find a way of infusing paper with a particular scent and researching o...

Process and Production: Propaganda Posters with Nick Deakin

Image
Propaganda Posters For today's workshop with Nick Deakin we're getting our hands dirty, with paint. In this workshop we will be creating minimal propaganda posters inspired by the 1968 french student protests and riots, the propaganda of that period in particular. These posters were crudely made for mass production with screen printers in occupied universities accompanied with various slogans such as ' Soyez rĂ©alistes, demandez l'impossible .' ("Be realistic, ask the impossible.") Below are some examples of these posters. We will be creating similar designs but instead of a screen printer we will be using acrylic  paint of red, blue and yellow and paint rollers. I've always found propaganda posters to be fascinating because they're not meant to the be perfectly designed, they're supposed to be crude and able to be produced by anyone, just as long as they're able to get the message across. To begin with, each student ...

Speculative Futures Week 3: Concept Design

Image
Concept Designs One thing I have to take into consideration is that the idea of designing around the object of pills, is and has been a very popular design choice over the years. Even the concept of taking pills as food has been done before if not over done. Additionally one thing that I have noticed is that there are a couple of students who are doing similar ideas with pills, I guess the idea is common in regards to fictional, speculative future.  This makes me think about what I can do that will be different than what has already been done. One thing I don't want to do is create another brand/company with some simple packaging prototypes because it's such a basic design idea to do, I want something that I can experiment with and reach out of my comfort zone a little bit. That being said I want to create something that can create Immersion, something that could be interactive (not interactive as in come and eat all these cold and flu capsules, just to clarify) and ...

Process and Production: Sub-Object Modelling with Jay Payne

Image
Sub-Object Modelling  For today's workshop session with Jay, we will be creating our own 3d character model out of a singular shape with the use of various tools such as extrude and tools that can be found on the sub object tool bar. We will also be looking at cel shading these character models nearer to the end of the workshop session. I am eager to get on with this workshop because this will be my first ever 3D character model creation.  Jay showed us Pictoplasma, an organisation that is dedicated to the art of character design, the site has an awesome archive of character designs that have been submitted by the general public and after having a quick flick through I would love to submit my Nythim character to the 'Pictofolio' they actually have a themed submission on at the moment called 'character stare down' where you can submit a character gif of the character staring towards the viewer this would be a great addition to my character and I might consi...
