Post Formative: Imminent Self

Post Formative Imminent Self

SO I MADE A ROBOT ARM.

Imminent self felt like it was one of my most insufficient projects this year, with a lot of confusion regarding the brief combined with little confidence of being able to meet the brief with a relevant outcome and the motivation to do so. During my formative I discussed my idea about bridging the imminence of technology with self in the form of human augmentation and advancements, the initial outcome was a tall order. I wanted to create a fictional company inspired by the genre of cyberpunk that advertised human augmentation. the initial ideas were to create multi media outcomes to project immersion but one thing I didn't take into consideration was time and having to juggle other projects. It's something that I have to develop upon. Also I talked about a potential secondary idea that I was thinking about but it had a lot of dead ends. I decided to stick with the augmentation idea and after the formative I began working on my outcome. After all the sessions with Jay combined with creating a 3d model for my Genealogies project, I started to really enjoy Cinema4D. With it being an entirely new software to learn this year at uni I wanted to expand my skills with the software because 3d modelling has been a design technique I have wanted to explore for a long time.

So anatomy isn't my forte, but using images from concept art and a model augmented arm that I used as reference I started modelling the basic shapes to the hand, wrist and forearm.

once I had the base skeleton done I started to flesh out the model. using a wooden hand model as reference and with the help of Jay's Sub-object Modelling sessions I made a thicker forearm, fingers with joints and a more rounded hand.

I wanted the design to have a very sleek black shine appearance as if it was a factory new premium object, similar to the advertisements for most technology today. I will be looking at lighting and metallic textures to achieve this. for the time being I used different shades of grey to separate parts of the hand to help with the modelling.

with some additional details with the forearm and the hand itself I started to look at animation, I experimented with rigging and with the help of tutorials i was able to rig the hand and fingers but due to positioning and anchors it was extremely awkward to animate, so i decided to scrap that idea.

I next looked at lighting and metallic textures, like I said before i wanted to have a sleek factory new appearance. Thanks to some tutorials I was able to get a really sleek black shine combined with gold accents inspired by the art style of Deus Ex mankind divided and Human Revolution.

With some additional final touches with lighting shape and textures, I began making renders and putting together two advertisements, one 10 second long advertisement and one 1 minute long video. along side this I created three still renders which were then edited using illustrator, these showcase a particular feature of the model. I created two separate animations, one with the wrist rotating and the other with parts of the forearm expanded out revealing the 'nano carbon inner plating'.

Edited Still Renders.

Advertisements.

I am extremely pleased how this turned out, I have noticed a couple of inconsistencies and things that I could tweak but over all I adore how this turned out and even though it's been a bit frustrating at times i'm really starting to get the hang of 3d modelling and i'm enjoying it. I've even considered using cinema 4d for my speculative futures outcome and seeing what I can make with the software.
