Post Formative: Speculative Futures
Post Formative Speculative Futures
With the initial idea for my speculative futures project being a multi sensual outcome hitting a bit of a dead end, I decided to reword the outcome for this brief. After creating my out comes for genealogies and imminent self using Cinema4d I started to enjoy working with the software, I wanted to explore, expand and develop my skills with it.
Experimenting with the Emitter Tool.
The first experiment I did with the emitter tool was creating a 10 second animation of multi coloured pills falling onto plane, this was a standard creation of placing 5 emitters above the render camera.
The next experiment was created by hollowing out the pill object and placing an emitter with a child sphere shape. The idea was to have the emitter fill the pill and the top part of the pill lift up after a short amount of time this would result in the spheres exploding which can be seen in the 5 second clip below.
The next experiment was add a helix spline to the pill, so as the top part is lifted the effector spirals round the pill as it rises off camera. I also added luminescence to the child objects to give a glowing effect.
After looking at some tutorials I learnt how to make more realistic textures such as glass and plastic and life like light sources to light my renders. Additionally I used a platonic shape for the particles inside of the capsule pill. I went for a teal/cyan colour because I believed it to be a eye catching and striking colour contrasting the blueish grey background.
For the first render i duplicated and adjusted the position of the pill, Additionally i made the colour of the particles a brighter blue as well as created a new emitter for each pill that had a sphere child particle.
I was given the idea by one of my peers to create a scene of the pill split in half with the particles spread over the plane. It was a straight forward creation seeing that all of the assets were already created, I simple separated and adjusted the top and bottom of the pill and took a render on the 180th frame. I then next imported the render into Adobe Photoshop and edited the image by removing some of the particles that had rolled/bounced too far to the edge. Additionally I experimented with the hue and saturation option allowing me to change the colour of the particles, these experiments can be found below.
Inspired by the company metrecal and their shake advertisement 'The Metrecal Steak' where the photographer poured the shake onto a plate to represent a 'meal'. I used this idea by creating a 3d model of a plate and placing a pill in the centre of the plate.
Thanks to one of Jay's process and production workshop sessions about product design using Cinema4d, I was able to create my own packaging for these pills. With the design initially created on Illustrator, I imported each side of the packaging into Cinema4d and assigned them to separate textures which were then applied to each side of the carton.
The mapping of the packaging worked perfectly and to make sure that the still render could see each side of the packaging I used the cloner tool to create 2 copies of the carton. Additionally I added a couple of pills to the scene as a form of detail.
Finally I brought all the renders into Photoshop and Illustrator to do some final touches including adding the name of the company 'Horizon Genetics'. I'm satisfied on how these renders turned out and i'm starting to really enjoy 3d modelling so much so i'm starting to consider taking up 3d Modelling and VFX as a potential career path.
